Carnegie Shadowing

On June 23rd, the LRC hosted a morning event.  Students from Roade, Campion and Kingsbrooke schools joined with students from Sponne to discuss the short listed books for the Carnegie Medal.

The Carnegie Medal is a particularly prized award for children's authors.  This is judged by childrens' librarians and school librarians.  Carnegie Shadowing has been introduced throughout the UK to encourage young people to read the shortlisted books.  Last year over 90,000 took part.  This is a valuable way of introducing new genres and authors to good readers.

The students spent part of the morning in spirited discussion about the different books and why they loved, hated or were indifferent to them.  A vote was taken and by a large majority 'Apache' by Tanya Landman was chosen.  This was followed by a school based quiz on the short listed books.   The winners were Roade School, closely followed by Sponne.

At the end of the event, Year 10 students were asking if they would be able to participate in the following year.  The answer was yes.  This year, two Year 11 students demonstrated their enthusiasm by coming into school especially for the event.

The winner of the Carnegie Medal was announced on June 26th - 'Here Lies Arthur' by Philip Reeve.
